Anything Else!

Know the Novel (Pt. 1)

It’s that time of the year again. And by that, I mean it’s almost NaNoWriMo…where I somehow make time to write 50,000 words in a month despite having a lot more “important” things I should be writing for. It’s fine…

I’m gonna be posting about…okay. Who had the brilliant idea to make me a writer when I can barely come up with titles??

Ahem.

Nevertheless….right now, the word doc is labeled as “Animal Novel” but I’m just going to shove titling to whoever I force to read it….

But anyway. Christine Smith has, once again, put up her linkup for the Know the Novel event. And I’ve done this for….this would be my third year? So I’m doing the linkup for the third time. And I’m EXCITED. (This is my fourth NaNo, though….WHICH MAKES ME MORE EXCITED cause I love the number four!)

So, introductions having been spoken…hear me, hear me…

1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?

Would you like an hour-long rant over the origin?

No?

Okay…um…to be honest, the idea was never “sparked”….it was just a natural outcome of many, many years of playtime with my little sibling.

I think I mentioned somewhere in this blog (or maybe I mentioned it in another blog…I can’t keep track, sorry) that I once had an idea for a novel called Elemental Girl based on a dream that incorporated Tom and Jerry, snow in the summer, a snow queen, and a purple shirt. Well, I soon expanded that world into a much greater world and…ended up incorporating the world that my sib and I spent ages building since I was in….well, definitely around second grade (American system-wise.)

It’s honestly hard to explain the rest, so I’ll just say years of playing pretend with our stuffies is what made this novel possible. Half the credit for this really goes to that constant fungus in my life I call a sibling. :))))

2. Share a blurb (or just an overall summary)!

Well. It has animals…and themes of innocence, I think. And a dragon…and some redemption? And just a lot of ridiculous chaos based on the stuff my sib and I liked to do? Like made up impossibilities we call natural.

And it also has fire, water, earth, and wind?

I’m always so bad at question 2…

3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects about the setting?

It takes place in a planet called Animalandia. And other places. :)))

One of my favorite aspects about the settings is a Certain Library Tree, Underwater World Expansion, and just inserting me and my sib’s old technology and fantasy blend into this world that exists parallel to Earth’s 50ish BC – 50ish AD.

And also, cute talking animals. EVERYWHERE.

This….I think…is actually a story about the setting….

4. Tell us about your protagonist(s).

Five of them! A duck, cat, twin hedgehogs, and a goldfish. It’s quite funny…the four former have actual real life stuffed animal counterparts….the goldfish does not but I wanted to include him anyway.

They’re also all boys. Because Veggie (my sibling) and I just felt most of our stuffies were boys (though we do have ladies XDD).

If I could give each one a trait…

Duck (Ozadon/Duckaluck) – chaotic mischief maker
Cat (Filedos/Cataract) – deceptively adorable prankster
Hedgie 1 (Roliki/Hedgington) – deviously inquisitive
Hedgie 2 (Eriski/Hedgewedge) – exuberantly curious
Goldfish (Deralos/Flyafish) – unpredictable excitable optimist

To be honest, they’re all chaotic pranksters with devious sides. They were like that since they could think…which is actually around age 2-4 in Animalandia because why not? But childhood still goes till age 17-25 (because I’ve met twenty-year-olds/thirty-year-olds/etc…mature adults they may be but children they still are. But maybe I’m stretching it….we’ll call the period after 15 adolescence, yes?).

Why the Duckaluck, Cataract names, though? Well, those were the placeholder names I had before I found the real ones and I can’t get rid of them so they still stay and I’ll force them into canon if I have to….despite English not being a language yet…

5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?

Uh….well….that’s a complicated but also very simple answer and I’ll leave it hanging.

Because I can, right?

6. What excites you the most about this novel?

It’s….one of the more personal novels I’ve undertaken. But I got permission to post about it here from Veg, so that’s all that matters.

To be honest, what excites me most is seeing, “How much story and narrative connectivety am I willing to sacrifice to insert all the chaos of the multiple years of our days playing pretend?”

The answer is yes.

7. Is this going to be a series? standalone? something else?

It should be a standalone, mostly because it tells a little bit of the history of World 1…specifically the history about a planet/world (the words are interchangeable because I kept on mistaking one of the other, so there we have it) that no one really knows about.

🙂

8. Are you plotting? pantsing? plansting?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Again….yes.

9. Name a few unique elements about this story.

I think the backstory is the most unique element, to be honest. Also, the fact that the protagonists start off as two-three year olds (cause animals age differently but also just…well, spoilers. But I can tell you that Animalandian animals age differently from our own world’s animals. From bugs to dinos to saber-toothed-tigers. They’re also all vegan because reasons that may seem obvious but are not. And because I’m not willing to include the reason why our own Animalandians can eat meat….you don’t want to know.)

And also, Veggie did help me come up with plot points when I was stuck. So half the credit, again, goes to her.

So….that’s it, I think? I’d also like to think the ending is unique, but I think it’s fairly common as a trope. XD

10. Share some fun “extras” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

Well….I actually don’t have anything advanced….*cries* I could share a pic of the stuffies but I don’t have one on hand….so instead, I’ll share with you all an old drawing (spring 2019…which is about 2.5 years ago??) I did of the kiddoes humanized…

To be fair, I DO like the face shapes, base sketches of the outfits, and the coloring – you know. This isn’t terrible but I want to learn how to either refine my current 2021 style or use this style (with flat colors and no shading) but in a *better* way….oh, yeah. Um. From left to right (if not obvious)….Filedos/cat, Deralos/fish, Eriski/hedgie, Roliki/hedgie, and Ozadon/duck

Well, this has given me second hand embarassment…but perhaps that’s a sign that I need to learn more humility. XD

And there you have it….my “Animal Novel” thing that’s…honestly just me doing this for Veggie. I’ve been meaning to write this for ages (as in…I have notes as early as 2017) but….now that I’m older and such, I wonder if I can tap back into the chaos and innocence of back then (don’t be so dramatic, Lemon, you’re only fourish years older than 2017) and produce something that at least my sibling will enjoy.

Come to think about it…you know how little reverence I have for the art of storytelling, yes? (See above, I mean.)

But this is the first time I’m really and truly writing something partly for someone else. Most of my stories are kind of centered around what I want…kind of like the LAPH stuff I have going on.

WELP!

That was fun! A big thanks to Christine for hosting a fun linkup (and giving us writers/authors an excuse to ramble about our upcoming pain). And I hope the rest of you also have a good NaNoWriMo (whether you’re doing it or not. But if you are…feel free to spam me with rambles yourself. :DD)

In the meantime, see you Thursday for more LAPH (and if you’re confused as to that particular world’s chronology, I made a little link thing in the menu)!

P.S. This post was brought to you by a Lemon Duck before she was swamped with work and chaos. If you engage with her when it’s posted, she may bite. But feel free to do so…it’s not like ducks have teeth.

  1. Yaaay! I’ve been looking forward to your post!!! And this sounds like THE most fun, sweetest thing! I adore that you’re writing something for your sister (I have a little sister too, and understand how special that bond is <3) plus returning to something from your childhood. That is so very special!

ALSO. It just sounds FUN. The characters seem like such a blast. I am all about chaotic pranksters! 😀 Also you mentioned dragons and you KNOW I'm all about that!

This sounds like a delight all the way around and something to cherish forever. I absolutely love it! I do hope the writing goes wonderfully. And thank you for always joining the linkup! Your posts make me smile every single time. ❤

Ahahaha….I hope it’ll be a blast…I know it’s going to be a blast writing it *cackles*. And, oh, yes…the dragon. The dragon will be fun.

Thank you for making the linkup! And for also doing it, since I love hearing about your stories and shenanigans. Thank youuuuu ❤ :)))
